Sensex down 182 pts at 19080; Nifty down 35 pts at 5742

Markets ends in the red amid volatile session of trade. Sensex was down 182 pts at 19080, off about 300 pts from days high. Nifty was down 35 pts at 5742, off about 130 pts from days high. CNX Midcap Index ends flat while BSE Smallcap Index ends marginally in the red. All major sectoral indices ends in red.


Markets ends in the red amid volatile session of trade. Sensex was down 182 points at 19080, off about 300 points from days high. All Nifty stocks barring HUL ends in red. BSE Bank Index was down 1.4%, in which ICICI Bank was down 2.5% and HDFC was down 2%. BSE Metals Index was down 1.3%, in which Sterlite Industries was down 2.9%. BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1.2%, in which Tata Power was down 3.4%, L&T was down 2.8% and BHEL was down 1.3%.

Other index losers were HUL, down 3.1%, Sterlite, down 2.9%, VSNL, down 2.4% and Unitech, down 2.4%. Index gainers were BPCL, up 5.1%, Sun Pharma, up 4.3%, Cipla, up 3.5% and ITC, up 2.1%. Midcap gainers were Thomas Cook, Suven Life, up 20% each, Unichem Labs, up 17.6%, VIP, up 11.8%, Deccan Aviation, up 11.4% and Essar Oil, up 10.3%. Non-Index losers were IFCI, down 7.3%, Shyam Telecom, down 9.7%, JK Cement, down 6.7% and Jindal Steel, down 5.9%. Advance-Decline ratio was at 3:5. Total market turnover was at Rs 1.02 lakh crore vs Rs 1.03 lakh crore yesterday. Total F&O turnover was at Rs 74,579 crore vs Rs 73,373 crore yesterday.

FNO Snapshot:

Nifty futures ends at 50 points, it added 20 lakh shares added (prov). Stock Futures sheds 2.3 crore shares (prov). IFCI saw major unwinding (Was In F&O curb), sheds 1.45 crore shares. Power, Banking, Pharma stocks were driven by short covering. Stocks out of the F&O curb saw long buildup.

HOEC: Up 11%; added 5.7 lakh shares; strong CoC seen
Essar Oil: Up 8.6%; sheds 12.4 lakh shares

Ispat Industries: Up 8.2%; added 16.4 lakh shares
Nicholas Piramal: 7.7%; sheds 2.5 lakh shares

Buzzers:

Airline stocks: Deccan Aviation up 10%, Jet Airways up 5.5%, Spice Jet up 17%.

Suven Life: Company sees revenue of $ 10-15 million from collaborative research. To raise $ 50 million in 2 tranches, to finalise first tranche by March. Vol 4x 10-day avg; still way off 52-week high of Rs 183.

Essar Oil: EGM OKs raising $ 2 billion via GDS to promoter co on pref basis.

Thomas Cook: Ties up with Japanese travel services firm to boost travel business. Emkay says tie up to be value driver for co mpany in the long-run. Vol 4x 10-day avg; still way off 52-week high of Rs 644.

Unichem: Reliance Capital buys 5.50 lakh shares @ Rs 192.99/share. Vol over 6x 10-day avg; still off 52-week high of Rs 286.

Kaushalya Infra: Up over 60% since listing on Friday; among top traded on NSE.

Indiabulls Finance: Reports say co likely to announce JV with global insurance company. Delhi HC OKs demerger of Indiabulls Sec biz from co on Dec 17.

Bilpower: Likely to sign JV with NTPC, deal to add Rs 500 crore to topline/year, said sources.

India Infoline: Board approves sponsoring mutual fund & setting up AMC. Board approves increasing limits for investments / loans up to Rs 2,000 crore.

SSI: At upper circuit ahead of board meet on Q4 & year ended Sep results.

JBF Industries: Mauritius based co to invest $ 125 million in its subsidiary.

Global markets today:

Asia's stocks fell for a fifth day; no run away selling seen in Asian peers. Most of the Asian peers recovered from days low. Korea recovered 3%, Hang Seng 2.5%, Straits Times 2% from days low. Concern that U.S. housing slump will derail economic growth. Commodity stocks were under pressue on speculation that demand for commodities will decline. BHP Billiton and Posco dropped. Shanghia was down 0.83%; PetroChina was down 2.5% to a new closing low.

Reasons for recovery were some bargain buying was seen in late trade. Some institutions began window dressing their portfolios towarsd year end. In Taiwan, FIIs net sell equities worth $ 169.5 million in today’s trade (Prov). FIIs have sold $ 380.8 million in last 2 trading sessions.
