Sensex up 342 pts at 20687; Nifty up 96 pts at 6274

Benchmark Indices hit new lifetime highs; saw minor profit booking at the end. Sensex ends up 342 pts at 20687 while Nifty ends up 96 pts at 6274. Profit booking was seen in momentum stocks. CNX Midcap Index was up 0.6% while BSE Small-cap Index was down 0.1%. It saw negative close for the first time after 20th Dec 07.

CNX Midcap Index was up 0.6% while BSE Small-cap Index was down 0.1%. It saw negative close for the first time after 20th Dec 2007. BSE Capgoods Index was up 2.6%, in which L&T was up 4.8%, Siemens was up 3.1%, BHEL was up 1.7%, Gammon was up 9.8%, Praj Industries was up 6%, Jyoti Structures was up 5.3%. BSE Oil & Gas Index was up 2.3%, in which RPL was up 5.2%, Reliance was up 3.1%, ONGC was up 2.9%, Essar Oil was down 1.8%. BSE Bank Index was up 2%, in which ICICI Bank was up 4.7%, HDFC was up 2.7%, Centurion BoP was up 6.9%, Kotak Mahindra Bank was up 2.3%. BSE FMCG was up 1.9%, in which HUL was up 4.1%, ITC was up 2.3%. BSE Metals was up 1.5%, in which Sterlite was up 5%, Hindalco was up 3.3%.

Non-Index gainers were Punjab Tractors, up 30%; Hindustan Motors, up 20%, NELCO, up 20%, Burnpur Cement, up 12.7%, Torrent Power, up 10.7%, Parsvnath, up 9.3%. ADAG pack buzz: Adlabs was up 17%, Reliance Communication was up 3.8%, Reliance Capital was up 3.8%, RNRL was up 3.2%. NSE Advance Decline ratio stood at 5:6. Total market turnover was at Rs 1.02 lakh crore vs Rs 1.07 lakh crore yesterday.

House of Pearls down 7.8%

M&M Finance down 5.5%

FNO Snapshot:

Nifty ends day at 20 point discount; some unwinding at the day end. Intraday trade high, fresh longs seen, some unwinding day end. Stock futures added 4.2 (prov ). Turnover was at Rs 67181 crore vs Rs 70651 crore yesterday. RPL was up 4.9%; it added 48.37 lakh shares in OI. RNRL was up 2.3%, it Sheds 15.3 lakh shares in OI. Reliance stocks account for top turnover, which was approximately Rs 19200 crore from 7 stocks, which constitutes of approximately 30% of total turnover.

Global markets today:

Asian markets end mixed; Nikkie ends down 4%. Hang Seng up 2.35%, Jakarta up 1.8%, Straits Times up 1.2%. Nikkei 225 down 4% to 17-month low, at the close of trade. Faces its worst New Year opening fall; on Yen strengthening beyond 109 level and after new year holidays session. Yen appreciates by 54 bps at Yen108.9/$1. In Taiwan, FIIs net sell equities worth $ 292.4 million in today’s trade (Prov). FIIs have sold $ 666.25 million during this week.
