Sensex dn 477 pts at 20251; Nifty dn 133 pts at 6074

Mkts slide on lack of direction on the day of opening of Reliance Power IPO. Large cap stock drag from the front. Midcap and Smallcap continue to be under pressure. Sensex ends down 477 pts at 20251, was down over 600 pts from day’s high. Nifty ends down 133 pts at 6074, was down over 180 pts from day’s high. All BSE Sectoral indices end in red.

Markets slide on lack of direction on the day of opening of Reliance Power IPO. Large cap stock drag from the front. Midcap and Smallcap continue to be under pressure. Sensex ends down 477 points at 20251, was down over 600 points from day’s high. Nifty ends down 133 points at 6074, was down over 180 points from day’s high. All BSE Sectoral indices end in the red. BSE Bank Index was down 2.4%, in which ICICI Bank was down 4.1% and SBI was down 1.6%. BSE Oil & Gas Index was down 1.9%, in which BPCL was down 5.5%, GAIL was down 3%. BSE FMCG was down 2.3%, in which ITC was down 3.6%. BSE Capgoods Index was down 1.9%, in which L&T was down 2.6% and BHEL was down 2.2%. BSE IT Index was down 1.9%, in which Satyam was down 2.7%, HCL Tech was down 2.5% and TCS was down 2.2%. Other Index losers were Bharti Airtel, down 5.5%, Sterlite Industries, down 3.4%, REL, down 4.4%, Suzlon Energy, down 4.1%, NTPC, down 3.7%. Non-Index gainers were Allahabad Bank, up 4.1%, Bank of India, up 2.1%, Crompton Greaves, up 4%, Gati, up 9.5%, UTV, up 7.5%, Geojit Finance, up 5%, Voltas, up 4.7%, Jain Irrigations, up 4.9%. Non-Index losers were Parsvnath, down 8.3%, Omaxe, down 5.8%, Apollo Tyre, down 5.1%, Tata Tea, down 5.6%, Bata, down 4.6%. NSE Advance Decline ratio stood at 1:2. Total market turnover was at Rs 92,895 crore vs Rs 78,227 crore yesterday.

FNO Snapshot:

Nifty future ends at 16 points discount, it added 44.2 lakh shares. Volumes seen picking up in F&O segment in last 30 minutes of trade. Fresh shorts seen in large caps, mid cap unwinding continues. Cost of carry reduces on account of stock unwinding.

Bharti Airtel: down 5.5%; added 15.27 lakh shares; 19% OI buildup
Jaiprakash Hydro: down 6.6%; sheds 8.1 lakh shares
Shipping Corp: down 6.3%; sheds 1.28 lakh shares
REL: down 6%; added 4.65 lakh shares; negative CoC seen

IT: Wipro, Satyam Computers, TCS, Infosys

Long Unwinding was seen in:

Misc: Reliance Communication, Ispat Industries, Parsvanath Developers, Bajaj Hindustan, Essar Oil, Nagarjuna Fertilizers, GMR Infra, IFCI, JP Hydro

Fresh longs were seen in:

Shree Renuka Sugars, Welspun Gujarat, Great Offshore, Orchid Chemicals, Peninsula Land, Voltas

Short Covering was seen in:

RNRL, Indian Hotel, SRF

Global markets today:

Asian stocks give up early gains to end weak. Hang Seng, Jakarta ends down over 3% from days high. Strarits Times down 2%, Thailand down 1.5%, Nikkei, Shanghai down 1%. Taiwan continous to outpoerform post win by the Nationalist Party in Saturday's legislative elections. Nikkei ends below 14,000 for the 1st time since November 2005. Yen appreciates by 32 bps at Yen107.5/$1. In Taiwan, FIIs net buy equities worth $ 681 million in today’s trade (Prov). FIIs have bought equities worth $ 1.39 billion in last 2 days.

Caution seen ahead of US banks' results. Citigroup to announce its fourth-quarter results later today. Investors are also awaiting Bernanke's testimony to the US Congress on Thursday.
