2nd biggest single-day point fall for Sensex

Sensex witnessed the biggest single-day point fall since May 18, 2006 when it was down by 826.38 points or 6.76%. Today, Sensex was down by 642 points or 4.3% and closed at 14358 while Nifty was down by 4.5% or 192 points, and closed at 4178. CNX Midcap Index was down by 4% while BSE Small-cap Index was down by 3%.

CNX Midcap Index was down by 4% while BSE Small-cap Index was down by 3%. All the BSE Sectoral Indices were down by over 2.5% each. BSE Metal Index was down by 6.5%, the major losers were Tata Steel, down by 10.2%, Sterlite, down by 8.2% and Hindalco, down by 5.8%. BSE Reality Index and Bank Index were down by 5.5% each.

Index Losers were RIL, down by 5.1%, ONGC, down by 4% and Bharti Airtel, down by 6.4%. In Banking Stocks, ICICI Bank was down by 5.3% while SBI was down by 5.8%. BSE IT Index hit the least on rupee hitting 41/1 per $ and was down by 2.6%.
NSE Advance Decline ratio stood at 1:7. Total market turnover was at Rs 63845.27 crore vs Rs 40522.11 crore on Tuesday.

IVR Prime listed today on the bourses at Rs 475 as against the issue price of Rs 550. The share closed at Rs 418 vs listing price of Rs 475 (hits intra-day low of Rs 385).

Rupee depreciated by 1% at 41.165 (hits intra-day high of 41 and intra-day low of 41.21) while Yen appreciated by 42 bps at 115.63 (hits intra-day high of 115.54 and intra-day low of 116.73).

Nifty futures discount widened to 35 vs 23 points on Tuesday (hit discount of 45 points during the day). Nifty futures turnover was 45% of total FNO turnover. Nifty futures added 78.5 lakh shares in OI. Fresh short positions were seen across various sectors. Metal, Reality & Banking stocks hit the most. Unwinding pressure was seen in the financial stocks. Fertilizer stocks stood out and saw mix of long positions and short covering.

Others: Reliance Capital

Bucking The Trend:
Bongaigaon Refinery was up 4%; added 8.2 lakh shares in OI
Triveni Engineering was up 4.7%; added 2.7 lakh shares in OI

Financial stocks: IDBI, IDFC, IndusInd Bank, Allahabad Bank
Others: NTPC, Parsvnath, Ashok Leyland
